FAQ: What is an engagement session like?

As you look for the perfect photographer, you will likely found a long list of “must ask” questions while chatting with who you are considering. To make it easier for you, I have started this series of blog posts to answer all of those frequently asked questions.

One of the common questions I often field are what an engagement session is like. First and foremost, I aim for it to be a relaxed and fun experience for you two! I often say that my mantra is “less stress” and that is certainly true during your time in front of my camera.

The first step is to determine what time of year you would like to schedule your session and if you have a type of or specific location in mind. Often times I encourage my couples to consider if they would prefer…

  • One location or several

  • Lake or ocean

  • Woods or field

  • City or country

  • Are you including any pets?

After that, we work together to determine what location(s) would work best for the two of you and when would be the best time of day to visit it.

Once we meet up for your session, we’ll usually chat about where we are meeting and generally relax for a few moments together. If you have any accessories or props that need to be brought along, I’ll help you take care of that. Then we’ll explore the location together! I usually start the session by photographing the two of you from afar with one of my longer lenses. Don’t worry, it always feels a bit weird your first time in front of the camera! But that feeling often fades fairly fast, especially after you see how awesome you two look in the first few frames.

My goal for the session is to capture awesome images of you together and to help ensure you are both comfortable and relaxed in front of my camera. With your newfound confidence, your wedding day images will be all that much better since you will have the camera jitters out of the way.

Often times, your session, which is typically 90-120 minutes long, is over before you know it as the time flies by so fast. Most couples have 60-100 fully edited images in their gallery from our time together.
